Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque was built over a period of some eight years starting in 1892 and is a mix of British colonial architecture and traditional Islamic motifs. One of the signature features of the mosque is the four minarets that are located on the top and are meant to look like traditional British clock towers. Much of the interior is covered in white marble and you will find a pretty blend of quaint Victorian design features mixed with Moorish motifs. The mosque can accommodate some 2,000 worshippers at one time and if you like religious architecture then this is not to be missed. Avoid visiting on Fridays and dress well covered if you mean to visit. -> Zoo Johor just cross the road, don't miss it too. 35 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay.

An island shrouded in legends of princesses and curses, or so the folklore says. Pulau Kukup National Park is one of the largest uninhabited mangrove forests in the world. The island was declared a “Wetland of International Importance” by RAMSAR in 2003, aimed at preserving the natural beauty of the island. It is home to an abundance of flora and fauna, including monkeys, wild boars and mudskippers all of which are visible from the boardwalk. A scenic, easy walk through the forest culminates in five levels of elevated platforms, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the island in its entirety. It should be noted that the climb can be strenuous for some, as the gaps between steps are quite large. Pulau Kukup is a kilometer away from the mainland, with boat trips to the island costing RM5 and admission to the National Park costing a further RM5. http://www.johorparks.com.my 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

Gunung Pulai is a 654 meter high hill near the city of Johor Bahru. Although “Gunung” means “mountain or Mt.” in Malay, it is technically not high enough to be regarded as a mountain. It might be regarded as a mountain because it is the only major high point in an otherwise flat region; however, here I will call it a hill. But what makes this place special is because it still contains substantial primary rainforest cover since it is a water catchment area for nearby Johor Bahru and Singapore, and it also has a spectacular waterfall!!!!, although it is under serious threats as well – which I will get to in a moment. Please contact the hosts for guide service.

Agro tourism with a saccharine twist, this attraction showcases the long-standing love affair between Johor and pineapples. Ladang Nanas in Alor Bukit is, as the name suggests, a pineapple estate. With the rich history involving pineapples in the state, no visit to Johor is complete without a visit to a pineapple plantation. Unofficially, there are 80 different species of pineapples found here, approximately one-third of the world’s total pineapple species. After learning about the cultivation process, visitors are invited to bite into some of the most juicy, luscious pineapple that the estate has to offer. Ladang Nanas is a government-owned property, with a pineapple research facility on-site studying this amazing fruit.

A sugary sweet way to discover the lesser known highlights of Pontian. Nictar Bee Farm, tucked away in the middle of Malaysia’s oldest pineapple estate, showcases locally harvested pineapples and honey. At this farm, visitors are treated to a beekeeping demonstration, learning how the bees are handled to ensure they produce top grade honey. The bees here produce monofloral honey with nectar from the pineapple trees, resulting in the honey tasting similar to the fruit. You are also taken on a tour of the plantation, which grows a crossbreed of pineapples from Johor and Sarawak, with the end product being succulently tasty. At the end of the tour visitors will have the opportunity to purchase honey and pineapple products for themselves or as gifts.

Jalan - Jalan Jangan Tak Makan (foods hunters)

We know that the best way to get to know a place and its people is through food. Every city has a couple of must-try places to eat and certainly Johor Bahru is no exception to the rule. Here are makan place considered old skool, rare & must try. Most of the spot nostalgic for me personally. Missed my foursquare food hunting activities. Sorry, no Hipster cafes listed here.
The wafting aroma of baking bread warmed by crackling flame of the wood-fired oven is enough to entice anyone walking along Jalan Dhoby to stop by. Kedai Roti Salahuddin in the old part of Johor Bahru has amassed a loyal following from locals since it first opened. This bakery prepares breads, cakes and pastries the old-fashioned way using a 70-year-old wood-fired oven to bake their goods, infusing them with a traditional, rustic flavour. Regulars will tell you that everything here is sublime, but be sure to try their Bengali curry puffs and buns as well. Also grab a fresh loaf of bread to go, which is best enjoyed with butter and jam. Parking can be an issue around here so it might be an idea to get someone to drive while you run in to the bakery. Do take note that Salahuddin Bakery is closed every Friday. 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

This humble roadside stall is well-known for serving up some of the best nasi lemak around. With all great nasi lemak, it’s the sambal that makes d’Cerry’s worth waking up for! Spicy but not overwhelmingly so and a little on the sweet side, it goes perfectly with the aromatic nasi (rice) cooked with herbs and coconut milk and a crispy piece of freshly fried chicken. 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

It’s a simple restaurant in terms of its ambience and set-up. However, don’t be fooled by its simplicity – they still serve amazing food here! The place retains the authentic kampong feel, which further complements its amazing and delicious local cuisine! 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

Hua Mui not only serves excellent chicken chop but it also opens early for breakfast, with kaya butter toast being the crowd favourite. But the main draw to Restoran Hua Mui is with their jeli susu (milk jelly)! It’s a simple dessert, with only evaporated milk poured over a cup of jelly. The jelly is soft to the tongue and simply melts in your mouth! A great dessert to end a great meal. 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

Opened since 1919, this is one of the oldest and traditional bakeries in the city. The banana cake has just the perfect moisture and the taste isn’t too sweet as well. If you love banana cakes, this is definitely one not to miss! 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

Cheap, delicious, and filling, Roti Canai is every Malaysian’s go-to breakfast staple! You can get it at any Mamak restaurant, but if you’re in Johor, word on the street is Bukit Cagar will serve you the best version of this flatbread. The dough itself, unlike bigger chain establishments, is handmade daily fresh at the stall, flipped and stretched into the perfect round shape and thickness, the dough is then cooked on a flat-girdle til golden brown with a crunchy crisp outer layer, but still soft and chewy inside; Serving you the perfect Roti Canai with a side of Dhal, and if you like spiciness, a dollop of sambal (Anchovy Chilli Gravy) in the middle. 45 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay

Wak Kentut’s Nasi Lemak (the name literally means 'fart shop nasi lemak'). There are many good places to have Nasi Lemak in JB, but here, you get the best. It’s a simple dish that comes with coconut flavoured rice, a generous serving of delicious sambal, fresh peanuts, slices of cucumber and their famous Malay fried chicken (must try!). The fried chicken served here is double boiled to ensure the outer skin is crisp and crunchy while the meat inside stays moist and juicy. 40 minutes drive from Pulai View Homestay 10 minutes drive from JPO & Senai Airport
