Ohiopyle is about an hour and a half from here, but it's a great day trip. Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob are close by (Frank Lloyd Wright houses), as well as rafting, hiking, biking the GAP (Great Allegheny Passage).

Bear Run Nature Reserve is out near Ohiopyle (so, an hour and a half drive). I love it because the trails are well-marked, and it's a lot less busy than Ohiopyle. If you're looking for a more low-key, restorative hike, Bear Run is the place for you. There's ample parking, and it's right across the street from Fallingwater.

The Cathedral of Learning is part of the University of Pittsburgh. It's known for a few things. 1. Tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere (42 stories) 2. The Nationality Rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd floors and each room is designed by a different Nationality - highly recommend a visit, and 3. Inside the main area, it apparently looks like Hogwarts, so if you're a Harry Potter fan, you may want to check it out.

Kentuck Knob is the lesser known Frank Lloyd Wright house out near Ohiopyle, but personally, I like it just a little bit more than Fallingwater. I'd highly recommend a trip if you're out that way.

Acacia is one of those places that you'd miss if you didn't hear about it from someone. It's in the prohibition-style, so the front door doesn't look like much, but venture inside, and you'll find some of the best cocktails (and man-buns) in the city!

Pamela's Diner is best known for their pancakes (nope, I haven't had them, because I don't like pancakes, but the Obamas loved them!) There are multiple locations, each with its own style, but the Strip District is closest to here. I'd recommend the croissant French toast with a side of Lyonnaise potatoes. Pamela's is open for breakfast and lunch, and there will most likely be a wait during those prime brunching hours (Pittsburghers love brunch), but put your name on the list then head around the corner to Peace, Love, and Little Doughnuts for a doughnut appetizer. Bring cash!

Everyone goes to Primanti Brothers for a "Pittsburgh-style" sandwich, but personally, I think the best sandwiches in Pittsburgh are at Carson Street Deli. They have inventive combinations that hit the mark (think buffalo chicken with egg salad - odd but somehow it WORKS). The deli is also a craft beer bar with a great selection - one of my favorite places in the 'burgh.

Zeke's has the best coffee in Pittsburgh, as well as great baked goods. They have both a coffee shop and drive thru in East Liberty, where they also sell their beans, and they participate in local farmers' markets selling their beans and brewed coffee. Page Dairy Mart is a little out of the way, but also near the GAP trail. They only take cash and serve the best soft serve ice cream (think Dairy Queen offerings, but local and more options). They're seasonal, so only open in the warmer months.

Getting Around

The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a great biking and running path that runs beside all three rivers. On the North Side, it starts about a mile and a half from here, next to the penitentiary. This also links up with the Great Allegheny Passage, and you can bike all the way to Washington DC!
