A neighborhood poboy shop tucked away in Old Metairie. Opened as a small grocery in the '70s serving poboys and New Orleans cuisine from the deli in the back. With the exception of a few grocery items still on the shelves, it operates more as a restaurant now. A good lunch spot off the beaten path.

New Orleans fare from Chef Susan Spicer. She is well known for her high-scale restaurant, Bayona, in the French Quarter. This is her more casual restaurant open for dinner and lunch. They offer brunch on the weekends and happy hour specials.

Good food at good prices. Many don't think of CostCo when considering dinner, but they have great pizza, sandwiches, salads, etc. I wouldn't go out of my way to get food at CostCo, but because it's so close to the house it's worth a mention.

Local brewery open nightly offering fresh beers with indoor and outdoor areas. They have different events through the week including pizza nights and movie nights. One of the better local breweries in the city and nearby is the beginning of the Lafitte Greenway, a bicycle path that takes you all the way to the French Quarter.

My favorite pizza joint in the city. The location on Metairie Road is nearby but they also have a location in the French Quarter. The pizza is delicious and huge and you can buy by the slice. The chicken Caesar salad can’t be beat and they have the best frozen White Russians in the daiquiri machine available for take out.

Sightseeing

Longue Vue House & Gardens is located on the grounds of the New Orleans Country Club. It was the one-time home of the Sears & Roebuck heir and is preserved as it was in the past. Tours of the property take place regularly and it is just down the street from the house. An quick stroll that transports you from urban New Orleans to a tucked-away-in-nature feel.

Getting Around

The Lafitte Greenway is a paved bike path that has the French Quarter on one end and the MidCity neighborhood on the other. It is an easy and scenic way to make your way downtown by bicycle. Near the start of the Greenway is the Second Line Brewery offering up fresh beers on tap. As you make your way towards downtown you'll pass by local pubs and restaurants, but for much of the ride you'll be in a nature setting as the path is full of natural Louisiana foliage and parks.

Parks & Nature

City Park is huge; bigger than Central Park in NYC. The southern edge of the park (which is where I'm closest to) is where most of the park's attractions are located. Along City Park Avenue on the southern edge of the park you'll pass swampy lagoons and moss draped oaks. As you enter the park you'll find the Museum of Art, putt putt golf, an amusement park for young children, sculpture gardens, paddle boat rentals, gondola rides, waling paths, etc. New Orleans City Park is beautiful and photogenic and is worth visiting if only for a stroll. As you go further north into the park you'll find a dog park, 2 golf courses, a driving range, and ballparks and fishing piers along the bayous.
