An der Jahreswende 1568/69 begannen im heutigen Simmering die Vorarbeiten zu einem der bedeutendsten Baudenkmäler der Renaissance. Eine Stunde Kutschenfahrt von Wien entfernt plante Kaiser Maximilian II. ein Gesamtkunstwerk: Ein Schloss der Superlative, orientiert an der Antike und gleichzeitig an den modernsten Vorbildern Italiens, umgeben von farbenprächtigen Gärten mit Springbrunnen und Wasserkaskaden, Tierzwinger und einem Ballspielhaus für das mondäne “Jeu de Paume” – die frühe Form von Tennis.
