Working historical farm and old growth woods, meadows, restored prairies and wetlands, and wetland woods characterize Gallant Woods Park. Wildlife sightings vary by habitat; look and listen for wood thrush and barred owls in the woodlands, Eastern bluebirds in the prairies, and chorus frogs, grey tree frogs, small mouth salamanders and fairy shrimp in the wetlands. Several of the wetlands have been restored by Preservation Parks, and these bodies of water attract shorebirds not otherwise seen in the area, including lesser and greater yellowlegs, and three types of sandpiper: solitary, least and spotted. The Interpretive Gateway introduces visitors to wetland habitats and describes the transition from farmland to restored native habitat.

Hiking/biking Trails
These trails are all paved with adequate shade and rest along the way. We have biked all of them and highly recommend each one.
The Sandel Legacy Trail is one of three segments of the Ohio to Erie trail administered by Preservation Parks. When completed, the Delaware County section of the Ohio to Erie trail will provide a continuous route running northeast from Westerville to the Licking County Line. The Ohio to Erie Trail will ultimately extend about 320 miles from Cincinnati to Cleveland. For more information on the Ohio to Erie Trail. The Sandel Legacy Trail is a 0.6-mile portion of a X mile rail trail connecting the quaint towns of Galena and Sunbury. Parking and a picnic area is located at the trail entrance in Sunbury. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail, and pet owners must clean up after them. Be sure to check out restaurants and shops in Galena and Sunbury's historic town square!

Paved bike trail beginning in Sunbury (or several other jump on parking lots) traveling to Mt. Vernon where it connects to the Kokosing Trail. Very nice trail with rest areas and plenty of shade.
