get the Pho - they have the best broth and were recommended by a local pharmacist who orders from them nearly everyday. They close at 10pm like most of the places in the area so get their fast. They don't open until 11am. They have a monitor behind the register showing the kitchen - that's confidence! I like them more than more expensive Korean fare which is also tasty but I really appreciate how they keep prices affordable and give such a great broth and aren't mean about the romaine lettuce for the wraps.

good roast pork buns and egg tarts - not so good coffee anymore but still worth going to. Very nice staff. If you go too early at 6am - the roast pork buns and egg tarts will not be ready yet.

My favorite place for egg tarts now. Their bread is more yeasty and chewy and less Asian bakery. They have the best coffee these days. At 6am, their breads will be ready but not their egg tarts.

Kee's doesn't get renewed hype to keep her in people's minds but she deserves the praise she's gotten. I like the Thompson. I haven't tried the creme brulee but the nice young man behind the counter compared it to Chinese egg tarts. I've only been twice but the walk from my duplex to her store is a breeze and Dominique Ansel's store is nearby.

Everything is so pricey these days so if you compare the amount of thought and labor that goes into his items, then he actually is budget friendly. I'm not a fan of the cronuts that everyone lines up for in the mornings. The Kouign Amann is like a fat homemade palmier and tastes just like the first Chinatown bakery on Pell Street that offered French pastries. So if I wanted something to please my mother, I would probably go to D Ansel's and pick one of those up. The freshness and clean taste of that fat butterfly (palmiers are called butterfly pastries in Chinese) is so satisfying in its simple flawless execution.

404 Broadway is a quick but often too crowded walk from my duplex and is just South on Canal, across from the Post Office and Starbucks. It's a chain but sometimes you just get tired and want something with no grease (hold the cheese and sour cream) and it's just peaceful and refreshing. I don't have a problem with Chipotle at all but then I've never had Taim which sounds like the Israeli bespoke version. :)

old school Chinatown by a bunch of guys who pooled their waiter wages to partner up and has been going on for half a decade. Catch them while you still can. Don't go to Hop Kee in the basement. It's not the same. If you know what to order, it's magic. Don't know if the old partners are still around but if they are, ask them for something charming and authentic - not the usual touristy foreigner fare.

People drive great distances to get their deli meats. I only know they charge two different prices for very thinly sliced prosciutto - hand cut or machine cut. Also, check out the plaque for Little Italy war veterans on the wall outside on Mott Street.
