Buildings&Places

The visit to the Ethnological museum is a gift- the exhibition is interesting, the entrance is free of charge and you are given a guided tour by one of the workers of the museum. You can show your appreciation by a voluntary donation. Keeping with the regional tradition of turning former private residences into house museums , Pristina’s Ethnological Museum (also called The Ethnological Treasure of Kosovo) is set in the Emin Gjiku Complex, an 18th-century property that belonged to one of Pristina’s wealthiest Kosovar-Turkish families. Three buildings, each one with outstanding architectural flourishes, house artefacts collected from Pristina and around Kosovo between the 15th and 20th centuries. Textiles, furniture, dowry trunks and kitchen utensils tell the story of how the city’s traders once lived and practiced their culture. In the sitting room, a raised bench for guests and lowered seating for the family speaks to the Albanian tradition of welcoming outsiders unequivocally into one’s home. The house was even used to shelter Jewish refugees during the war.

The museum has two floors, one with a history of the area through the last couple of thousand years and the other capturing more recent times. I highly recommend getting a tour (also free with an optional donation at the end)

This is a proper Marmite building (you'll either love the architecture or hate it). The library is just across the road from the Mother Theresa cathedral and a short walk from the main street in the city. It has nice gardens around it, as well as an unfinished Orthodox church nearby too. It's definitely unique. Inside is very 1960s/70s and definitely worth a quick look.

For just one euro you can go up the clock tower, from the top, there is an amazing view of the national library and the city in general. Pristina’s new cathedral, unofficially named after the famous ethnic Albanian nun, is a welcome addition to the city’s skyline. Built-in new-renaissance Italianate style, its two campanile towers will reach 70 meters once completed

Another Pristina icon, the Newborn monument was unveiled on 17 February 2008, the day Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia. Every year, to mark the anniversary of the declaration, a different artist is invited to reimagine and reinvigorate the monument by repainting it with different motifs – usually designed to echo broader political or cultural conversations. In 2019, Newborn was decorated with patterns to represent energy, water, oxygen, nature, biodiversity, and recycling.

Small but nice collection of modern art made by young Kosovar artists. The location is ideal in the city center, close to the library.

Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque is an active mosque and one of the city’s most revered cultural monuments. It was constructed in 1461 and is a stunning example of Ottoman architecture. It’s definitely more restrained than other mosques I’ve seen in the region but just like the nearby cathedral, it has an understated beauty. The stone ablution fountain, set in the front garden, is particularly impressive.
