Wild places

Mt Rosea is one of our favourite, and most visited peaks in the Grampians. It has the benefit of challenge, variety, a 360 degree view and, on most days, the privilege of having the summit to yourself.

A truly wonderful day circuit is to take the old track up from the Wonderland track, weave up to the Lookout, then head north along the Difficult road then turn off to return to Halls Gap along the gorgeous Grampians Peaks Trail.

This is a rough track up an impressive ridge to the east of The Shack. As there is no water along the way, even in the wettest of seasons, it is important to take water on this half day hike. The steepness of the range itself and the cliffs on both sides of the summit make this an spectacular short adventure.

This newly opened walking track is part of the Grampians Peaks Trail and, in the wetter months, rewards your effort with an increasingly large set of waterfalls falling from overhanging sandstone cliffs. For the determined and prepared you can extend this to include Brigg's Bluff or even Mt Difficult though a very early start would be needed to achieve this last return trip. This is a highly scenic landscape on a wide range of scales, from the expansive summit view right down to the microcosm of a verdant green mossy rock garden. This is also known as the Waterfalls of Gar hike.

These falls are a short walk downstream from Mackenzie Falls (or upstream from Zumsteins) but the experience could not be more different. Here you can swim reasonably safely and many times you will have the place all to yourself. Take a lunch and something to swim in (or out of). A truly memorable day trip.

Sightseeing

A steep 2 km walk up the road from the carpark with a torch for either sunrise or sunset can be truly magnificent and awe-inspiring view. As this peak is almost 1200m ASL be prepared for windy, wet or very cold conditions on top.

Food scene

A pint of Dark Vader stout after a winter's hike or a refreshing Red '67 after a warm day's evening walk, this is our local. The food is also great.

Best before the rest of the tourists descend after checking out of their accommodation, the coffee here is easily up to the standards of the travelling Melbourne judges. The breakfast here is worth a look, hearty enough to encourage you to head out onto the walking tracks and into the ranges.

Wildly eclectic, diligently prepared, very more-ish. We often celebrate here or just grab some vegetable samosas on a whim. We suggest you grab some takeaway, then sit out on the Shack deck to watch the glow of the setting sun march up the Boronia range.
