City/town information

Hay-on-wye, the town of books. But much more than that it's a beautiful, quaint old market town. Plenty of good pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops and useful amenities. Be sure to check out the newly renovated Hay Castle. Take a rug or snap up some of the free deckchairs and enjoy a picnic on the grassy courtyard there. Or pop into the cafe for a bite and a drink. Enjoy a birds-eye view of the town from the viewing platform or even let the kids dress-up in the medieval costumes they have lying around the visitors centre. Hay-on-wye is also known for the literary festival which happens once a year. Now much more than just literature it has theatre, music, stand-up comedy and much more.

Mountains and countryside

A family favourite. Hay Bluff is the mountain on the left as you look out from the Cruck. A great walk which doesn’t take too long, with breathtaking views of mid Wales and only a 10 minute drive away. Hay Bluff car park: https://goo.gl/maps/sxBC6g63ojinnRvb8

You can drive or walk from here on a hot day for a dip in the river at Glasbury. The pebble beach, parking and on site toilets make it an ideal location for a summer’s day picnic with the family, or an early morning dip with the dog walkers. We do not endorse river swimming during the wet or winter months for safety reasons, and advise caution at all times. Canoe hire is also available in Glasbury village seasonally too. The Roundabout at Begwyns Bluff It is possible to see almost all of the Brecon Beacons National Park from the Roundabout at Begwyns Bluff, with a reasonably limited climb involved. Lesser known than its counterpart in Hay-on-Wye, but no less spectacular, it’s usually a bit quieter too. The tree enclosed, wall lined Roundabout at the top also makes for an ideal mulled wine/mince pie/picnic opportunity depending on the time of year you’re visiting too. You might want to check out Google Maps before you go, but basically park up and follow the other walkers! Postcode: LD2 3JN

The Twmpa (or Lord Hereford's Knob as it's known in English) There are some striking hikes around the Twmpa but please plan properly and take good care if you’re going to walk up or around the mountain. Alternatively there is some beautiful common ground (see location below) at the foot of the mountain which is an ideal spot for a picnic or for the kids to run around. The location below will take you to the common land where you can find space just off the road on the common to park up. Location: https://goo.gl/maps/JAKj5Gn72Y6r6oAk9

Pubs & food

A beautiful pub with a warm atmosphere. The food is delicious and they do an incredible Sunday roast. There is a well thought out wine list and some great ales on tap. Also, if you’re lucky enough to be staying at the Cruck around Christmas time then you need to see this place. Website: www.eatdrinksleep.ltd.uk

Adventure & activities

We’ve used these guys many times for canoeing. They have various activities for all ages and capabilities and we can recommend hiring canoes to paddle down to Hay-on-Wye. It’s a fun and easy row downstream to Hay bridge where they will pick you up. They also have mountain bikes and more. Website: www.blackmountain.co.uk
