Outdoor Activities with Dogs

When there is snow, there is a dog-friendly cross country ski, snowshoe, and running trail! You can have your dog run alongside you and enjoy the hills and woods of Mt. Ashwabay. Most other area ski trails don't allow dogs, so this is a treat! Check their website for details: https://www.mtashwabay.org/skijoring--dog-trails.html

Hiking, biking, cross country ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, ATV, horses, sledding hill, and forest roads to get yourself lost. Cross country ski trails are not dog friendly, but any other time of the year it’s a great hike with you dog off leash. During winter, I just go out there and walk the forest roads with my dog off leash. The forest is exceptional.

It’s a campground but also a great coniferous forest that smells like a pine dream. There’s an ATV trail that you can walk on and let your dog off leash. If you go north/east on the trail far enough, you’ll make it to the Houghton Nature Preserve. You can bike this trail, too.

This is where our artesian well is, open to the public. Fill up your water bottles and jugs here. Let your dog wade into the water and enjoy a great beach and trail head for the Washburn Walking Trail. Leashed dogs welcome. Lots of little beach pull-offs along the trail.

If you wander down the beach, you’ll find space to let your dog run of leash without any hassle. Spectacular beach for all day hangs. You can SUP and kayak here if you put in at the boat launch just off HWY13.

There are lots of river bank trails around the campground but if you drive a little further north on Big Rock Road past the campground you’ll find a trail to the river that’s more off the beaten path. We let our dogs run off leash here. It’s about a half-mile from the road to the river. Flat trail until you get close to the river, then there are steep hills.

There’s an 8ish car parking lot at the trail head. The hike is moderate but it’s slippery in places where the trail goes downhill. The falls are at the end of the trail along with a picnic spot with two picnic tables. I saw birds, ground & tree critters and the ice formations in the waterfall were gorgeous! I let my well behaved fog off leash and pulled off the trail to pass others along the way.
