Mr Austin built this mansion in 1871 - but lived there for only 3 months. In that time he entertained guests from around the world - including royalty - and of course - the rabbit and the fox. Those few rabbits reproduced and within 6 years had spread across the whole east coast of a Australia.
Mrs Austin sold the mansion and most of his land and gave most of her money to help establish the Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

From Winchelsea we recommend heading out to TORQUAY and follow the Great Ocean Road, taking time to stop at several unique and beautiful places, before spending the night at Apollo Bay or Port Campbell.
If you cant find a place to stay along the way it takes about 2hrs to get back to Winchelsea from Port Campbell. A round trip from Winchelsea to Winchelsea via Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell, and the Great Ocean Road will take 10-12 hrs (7 hrs driving). A shorter trip is possible (but then you miss out on some of the best sights)
