Traditional Venice Boat Rowing Lesson

Are you ready for a very particular experience? You will learn how to row a traditional Venetian boat through the canals of the city!
We will meet at our boats laboratory, set in the area of Cannaregio. We will show you our squero (our gondole laboratory), where we restore and craft gondole. We will introduce you to the world of the Venetian boats, explaining you their characteristics and peculiarity.
After this brief introduction, we will explain you how to row with ancient techniques. We will show you how to use the rows and other tools in order to have a safe and accurate rowing experience :)
If you are a bit scared to fall into the canal, don't worry! We will row along the less busy canals, where you can be more self-confident of yourself!

Hello I am Damiano and I am one of the few "maestri d'ascia" still living in Venice. Have you ever heard of a maestro d'ascia? Well, it is someone who preserves the art of building and crafting gondole.
Some years ago I founded VeniceOnboard, a sportive association that recovers and restores traditional Venetian boats, also teaching the traditional rowing techniques! Together with Emiliano e Nicola, we cultivate this passion, hoping that it will never die.

These guys really have a passion about the rowing with traditional Venetian techniques. The experience felt like the first lesson of the course, where you start with a bit of history and theory, and continue with the real practice. The best thing is you don’t need to be physically strong or agile to succeed: the most complicated part was going into and out of the boat. Hosts were very friendly, and you can ask any questions you want. Highly recommended !

My husband, myself and our dog really enjoyed learning about rowing traditions and spending time on the water with Niccola! He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about his skills. We learned a lot and it was a uniquely local experience to be able to float down quiet residential canals and hear the greetings and chats between Niccola and his fellow locals along the way. The rowing was of course fun, but also really made us respect the skill that goes into it! Niccola and his colleaues run a great local boat club that mostly focuses on restoring old boats and spreading the skill of non-competitive Venetian rowing to locals, so we felt good to support their work. Definitely recommended!

Great, memorable, & unique experience! Highly recommended! I had been to Venice before, I so really wanted to do more this time than look at churches and historic sights. I wanted to EXPERIENCE and EXPLORE Venice in a UNIQUE way. Sitting in a gondola getting rowed around doesn't really appeal but this class did. I was able to learn, to be active, and see a whole new side of Venice thanks to this class. I highly recommend it! A great and memorable experience! My teacher was Luca who first explained about the group that is restoring traditional Venetian boats. I asked a lot of questions and he patiently answered them all, from boatbuilding methods to the health of the lagoon. Then we set off in a "topa" - a traditional boat similar to a gondola but for two "crew". I started off learning the stroke in the easier bow position while Luca rowed and steered from the stern. It's not as easy as it looks but Luca was extremely patient and encouraging even when I made mistakes. It was fun to have a challenge of learning something new while seeing Venice from the deck of my own boat! We started off in quieter back canals that are barely wide enough to fit through, and later rowed a part of the Grand Canal. Then we explored more side canals which I would never have been able to see any other way. It was clear that the lesson can be tailored to any ability/fitness/interest level - Luca really wanted it to be a fun experience for me and made sure I got that. I really enjoyed the challenge and a little workout. (It helped to have some conditioning and boat experience but even a beginner could do this, and you can take breaks if you wanted/needed to.) There were two times when the canal was so narrow, I had to stop and let Luca row alone. It was no problem also to stop to take a picture or drink water so it wasn't at all a boot camp type experience! Luca was a great teacher not just from being patient and encouraging but also because he wanted to challeng me. When I finally got a hang of rowing in the front, he showed me how the steer/row stroke works in the stern so I got to try that too. That's much harder so I need more lessons for sure! But it was good to try and rounded out the experience for me. Next time I'm in Venice, I'll try the stern again. : ) Above all, I got a very unique, insider's view of Venice. I got to row past other boats and through back canals I would not have otherwise seen. Luca pointed out all kinds of interesting buildings or features as we went. All in all, this was a fantastic experience! I was in Venice on my own solo getaway but I hope to come back with my teenage son and husband - they would have loved this too! *** Note: the boat club that runs this experience has lots of boats and can organize different experiences, from different vessels to sailing a traditional, flat-bottomed boat out in the lagoon. It sounds like they can tailor an experience for many different interests so inquire if you have a slightly different experience in mind.*** THANK YOU LUCA and DAMIANO FOR A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE ROWING IN VENICE!

Don't look any further - if you want an authentic, personalised experience where you discover the culture and traditions behind the main Venice mode of transport, and on top of that get to learn how to navigate yourself, then this is where it's at! We are so glad we didn't get caught in the 'tourist trap' gondola rides, costing an arm and a leg for simply 25 minute rides! With this experience, we visited the workshop where true lovers of Venice boats (the gondola is simply one of many types!) dedicate their lives to restoring them and to teaching others, before embarking on a boat and getting an hour or so getting taught how to row! The canals we rowed through were calm, we felt safe with our guide, who told us stories and showed us places we never would have heard or seen otherwise. This was a true highlight of our trip, and definitely worth the money! We urge you to take a chance on this experience and see for yourselves!

We had such a great time with Damiano! Rowing in very quiet canals of Venice in a far less touristy part of town was so peaceful and magical. Damiano does a great job talking about what he does and answering all our questions about the traditional venetian boats culture and life overall in this city.
