Qué harás

The dieties, or Orixás, of Candomblé play a prominent role in the culture of Brazil. From the food to the music to the dance to the world-famous carnival, Candomblé is ever-present. To not understand Candomblé is to not truly understand Brazil.

Candomblé started in the sugar cane fields of Bahia, Brazil and we’ll be joining you from the capital of Bahia — Salvador. Our guide in this cultural journey is a Candomblé alabé (head musician) with more than 20 years experience inside the religion.

Together we’ll explore:
* The three primary lineages of Candomblé in Bahia and its sister religions around the world
* The primary Orixás present in Bahia’s Candomblé — their roles and what they signify
* The fascinating synchronism between Candomblé and Catholicism
* The influence of Candomblé on Salvador’s Carnaval — the afoxés, afro blocos, and “street candomblé"
* The role of music and dance in Candomblé

You can’t have Candomblé without music — at least not when the head musician is involved — so we’ll spend about half of our time exploring three rhythms of three different Orixás: Oxum, Oxóssi, and Xangô. You’ll learn a basic rhythm for each Orixá, and maybe even a related song and dance. No instruments, no problem. The Brazilian way is to make do with what you have nearby. If you have a percussive instrument that’s great — but a tabletop, shoe box, or even your hands will work great
Other things to note
You don't need to bring anything other than your curiosity. If you have an instrument, it's great to have it handy -- but we actually expect that you will not. We want everyone to feel welcomed, and you ARE welcome, so the rhythms are simple and dancing and singing is optional.

We are Jen and Bira — a husband and wife team from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and the founders of Salvador Guidebook, a travel concierge service focused on helping visitors to Salvador, Brazil experience our amazing city through the eyes of a local.

Bira is an internationally-recognized music professor, specializing in the rhythms of Candomblé. He is also the son of a mãe-de-santo (head priestess), has been a part of Candomblé for more than 20 years, and is the alabé (head musician) of the terreiro Ilê Axé Omim J’Oba. Bira is the musical director at the Diaspora Cultural Center in Salvador’s historic center and leads its carnival group, Afoxé Aryalogum.

I (Jen) moved to Salvador in 2015 and regularly attend Candomblé ceremonies with Bira. I share Bira’s passion for Salvador and unlocking the mysteries of this amazing city and culture.

This is a brilliant experience! Not only do you get to learn and appreciate about something completely new (at least to me), you get to practice some singalong and embrace a wonderful culture! I would highly recommend this trip, the two are absolutely lovely and accomodating hosts

My nephew and I took this experience and really enjoyed it. Bira is a wealth of knowledge coming from the Candomblé tradition, and Jen's excitement and passion really come through the screen. Definitely an informative and immersive experience into Candomblé, from throughout history to how it shapes daily life in Bahia. Highly recommend taking this fun trip to Brazil from your own home!

This was a fascinating introduction to a religion I didn't know anything about. It was a great mix of photos, music, stories and links to popular culture. Jen was a super host for the experience and Bira her partner was an excellent musician. We did this as a birthday present for my grandmother who lives in a different part of the country and is very musical and we were all on the zoom call together - it was very special.
