Cycling quiet roads, majestic mountains & discovering local secrets

Mexico is truly an amazing place to explore on a bike. This week-long cycling adventure gets you out of the sterile all-inclusive and will have you based in one of our villa partners vacation properties all of which are located one block from the beautiful beach in a town called Bucerias.

Our week-long tour is set up to allow for a wide variety of skill levels. We always ensure that there is at least one VeloGuide per 3.5 guests on each ride. This allows those who are new to road cycling to not feel intimidated and to be able to ride at their own pace. On the flipside, cyclists who are super fit and like to ride harder will be kept company by our lead VeloGuides.

This unique multi-day cycling experience is set up to take all the thinking and guesswork out of your hands and into ours. Our mission is to show you Mexico that most people miss because they confine themselves to the hotel poolside. Every ride that we do includes some aspect of local culture and of course food!

The rides are very diverse! We start the week off along the quiet and flat farm side roads east of Bucerias. We then move to the coastal roads to get a feel for climbing before we head out for a final day where you get to tackle the majestic Sierra Madre mountains outside of Puerto Vallarta.

My name is Jillian, one of the co-founders of VeloGuide which was launched in October 2017 as a bold new initiative to connect the traveling cyclist with a bike and a guide all across the globe. I will be your virtual host and Joel and the rest of his team will be your VeloGuides in Bucerias.

We understand that when visiting a new location or even one you have been to before, getting out on a road bike ride can be overwhelming. Traffic, safe routes, fear of getting lost and finding a bike can make the idea a non-starter. Joel and Jillian will take all the guesswork out of it and you will truly be able to #ridelikealocal. Their local knowledge and love of cycling make this experience unique!

This is an amazing trip. I usually go places and make my own arrangements: find hotels, rent equipment, figure out food, figure out routes. This trip, it was a bit of a leap to throw my fate into the hands of Bici Bucerias, and I'm glad I did. Jillian and Joel took amazing care of me. They are knowledgeable residents of Bucerias; Joel's enthusiasm for riding and all things bicycle is palpable. Joel -- and his staff, and extended family -- are kind, good guides, and really enthusiastic guides and riders. THE TRIPS THEMSELVES For five of six mornings, we were up at the shop, meeting a group of riders for trips around the greater Bucerias area. Every day had a handful of riders coming in for multi-trip packages, or who had arranged their own rides with the shop or through VeloGuide dot com. Joel ensured there were enough guides that we could ride at our own speeds -- which was good, since skills levels varied from comfortable riders looking for easy days, to racers looking to get in a hard ride during their days off. Be aware that several of the trips overlap: San Juan is the first step on the way to the Arroyo, which is in turn on the way to Furtunato. I found the different rides to be just fine -- Joel found different side roads to explore, different end points to stop at, and the weather and views were different enough from day to day that it didn't feel repetitive. I also joined for the (optional) food tour, a relaxing evening ride through town to try out various foods & drinks. Delicious! THE STAY I was put up in a small rental unit run by Joel and Jillian. The room was comfortable for one; for two, it might have felt somewhat intimate: it has limited storage. That said, I used it mainly for making breakfast in the morning, sleeping at night, and a nap in the middle. The rest of the time, I was exploring Bucerias, relaxing on the beach, eating at local restaurants, and catching local busses out of town. HOSPITALITY I need to say: Jillian and Joel are two of the sweetest, most personable people I've had the pleasure of hanging out with. Within half an hour on the first night, during the welcome dinner, I felt I was being treated as a family member. I was delighted to join the extended, multigenerational group for a social meal over the week, too, and to know there were friendly faces to turn to. Everyone in the family was excited to give travel advice, from suggestions on good restaurants, to nearby towns and beaches worth visiting, to how to arrange a whale watch. Overall, this was a FANTASTIC adventure. I'm looking forward to other trips through Bucerias, and to arranging other trips through VeloGuides.

I thoroughly enjoyed my one week cycling adventure with Bici Bucerias and Veloguide. About me: I am a novice road cyclist (I ride a basic commuter bike daily and biking on my very basic 7 speed bike is a major part of my life). Nevertheless, I found the experience of being around the serious cyclists, riding ultra high end road bikes, and having expert guides *really engaging*. In terms of pace: I feel like this was the perfect adventure for someone like me, who has an interest in scenic rides and figuring out the basics of road cycling. (This would also, of course, be a perfect match for serious road cycles, as I observed that all the other folks on our rides had been on multiple longer international cycling adventures and were very pleased with their experience, too). Some basics: - I rented a bike from Bici Bucerias that was super high end: feather light and beautifully maintained. They also generously allowed me to borrow their coaster bikes to let me tool around Bucerias and the surrounding countryside. - The rides were very well planned out. The early rides were shorter and covered gentle hills, building up each day to our ultimate ride uphill into the mountains near El Tuito. - Breaks were well timed. Water/drinks were provided. - The food was excellent. After our rides, we typically ate lunch together at a local eatery in Bucerias (or in one case, a place on the other side of Puerto Vallarta, where our mountain ride ended). We also enjoyed two evening meals, at the start and at the conclusion of the one week tour. - We received some nice swag (I especially liked the colorful cycling socks) - I stayed in an apartment the owners of Bici Bucerias also own. It was perfect: quiet, with a lovely garden and pool, and a very short walk to the beach. - The owners and staff of Bici Bucerias were really helpful answering my questions about groceries, additional bike rides, using the bus, etc. - The guides were really good about making everyone feel included (even me - a novice who needed someone to run me through the basics of shifting gears on a high end road bike). They also kept us safe - making sure that we were aware of transitions well in advance and pointing out the frequent speed bumps that are found in Mexico). On the basis of these criteria, I recommend this adventure for cyclists who are serious, but also for folks out there who are just trying out touring and want to see the beautiful Mexican landscape.
